Once again, cancer has struck down
one of our own. Our “Hill Country Contrarian”, our no
B.S. barber, our friend to all animals, our smiling face
on High Street, the lover of all things living, our dear
friend, Gael Montana, lost the fight against her
esophageal cancer which was diagnosed in late 2008. AND
HARD she fought! She told her oncologist in Kerrville
that his recommendation to just “go home and die for
there isn’t any hope” wasn’t acceptable.
She told MD Anderson, who, after 5 months, told her to
“go home and get her affairs in order” thanks, I will
get my affairs in order but I’m not done yet. She was
told by Dr. Cohen with Cancer Centers of San Antonio
that “hey…let’s see if we can beat this thing” and man,
they all tried. Gael gained a quality of life for about
60 days that she otherwise would not have had the
opportunity to. She came home, she laughed, she dined ,
she visited, laughed, smirked, cajoled and carried on in
Gael fashion for a bit. The cancer did come back, with a
vengeance and she grew tired. We all are very blessed to
have known her. She will never be forgotten. |
